Highlighting an area of interest

Printer-friendly version (112 KB)

With the Matrox realtime colorization effect, you can adjust the brightness and contrast, or control the red, green, and blue components of a clip. You can also crop your clips and effects in real time to control how they appear on the screen. Using a combination of both the realtime colorization and cropping, you can create special effects that help you focus on a particular area of interest in your video projects.

  1. Set up the Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline

Start Adobe Premiere Pro and import a video clip, placing it onto the Timeline on track Video 1. Select the clip, choose Edit > Copy, select track Video 2, then choose Edit > Paste to make a duplicate of the original clip. Make sure that you exactly align the two clips on the Timeline.

  2. Add colorization

To split a clip, do one of the following:

    1. Drag the Matrox Colorization video effect onto the clip on Video 2. Click the Setup button setup beside your effect in the Effect Controls window so that the Colorization dialog box appears. Choose an effect from the Effect List, or click the Custom Colorization tab to change the settings for your selected colorization effect. Try choosing the Orange Burst effect.

  3. Add cropping

To apply crop settings to your colorization effect, click the Crop tab. Use the crop controls to crop any edge by a given number of pixels.

The idea here is to highlight an area of interest with the colorization effect, while using the crop feature to reveal the original clip on track Video 1, unaffected by the colorization.

  4. Apply an animated crop over time

Because the crop settings are keyframeable over time, you can create keyframes on the Crop track to precisely position and move the highlighted area to follow the action of your clip.

Note:  Make sure you clear the Simple edit option so you can add keyframes at different frames of the clip.

Now let's move the cropped area over time to highlight the skier as he moves in the frame by adding more keyframes with different crop settings on the Crop track, similar to the following illustration. (If you're not familiar with creating keyframes, see Customizing your effects using keyframes.)

  5. Preview your effect in real time

To preview your effect, press the Play button in the Monitor window or press the Enter key on your keyboard.
