Going the Distance for UFC’s First 4K Broadcast for DIRECTV

In preparation for their first 4K broadcast on DIRECTV Pay-Per-View, Reality Check Systems (RCS) built a system—comprising a Matrox X.mio3 video card as a crucial element—that would allow UFC to use its existing 2K graphics package and increase the resolution to 4K.

Closed captioning (CC) is a specialized tool to enhance the viewing experience, particularly for deaf and hearing-impaired audiences. Finding previous solutions less than ideal at preserving and previewing CC information during editing operations, Matrox developed 4VANC, a solution which offers CC support for Final Cut Pro (FCP) through the MXO2 and Mojito MAX editing products.

“[…] We sought to provide a means of preserving and previewing CC information during editing operations and printing it back to tape if necessary — to aid our broadcast customers who have had years of content, including captions, saved on tape,” said Dan Maloney, Technical Marketing Manager, Matrox Video.
