Edit on your laptop, finish on Matrox RT.X
Printer-friendly version (221 KB)
With Matrox RT.X, busy video editors can use a laptop computer to capture and edit video clips while on the road, and then later assemble their projects back in the studio. This tutorial explains how you can use Adobe Premiere Pro on one computer as a stand-alone editing station without any dedicated Matrox hardware, and then port your project to an RT.X finishing station for realtime playback and addition of Matrox realtime effects, or export to MPEG-2 format for DVD authoring.
-
Acquire footage
We'll use the Adobe Premiere Pro editing station to capture our footage using a DV-1394 device and a compatible DV-1394 capture card. To configure Adobe Premiere Pro for DV acquisition, do the following:
- Start a new project by choosing File > New Project.
- In the New Project dialog box, choose the available preset DV - NTSC > Standard 48kHz and click OK.
Note: If you're working with PAL video, select the appropriate DV - PAL > Standard 48kHz preset.
When you are satisfied with your title, choose File > Save As. Specify a location and filename, then click Save.
- Capture your video clips by choosing File > Capture.

- Press the Play button on your DV-1394 device, and then click Record in the Capture window. For details on capturing clips, see your Adobe Premiere Pro User Guide.
-
Edit your project
Assemble your Timeline using Matrox-supported transitions (such as Adobe Premiere Pro's Cross Dissolve). You'll notice that while you edit, these transitions will not be realtime. A red bar will appear along the top of the Timeline.
Note: For information on how to select which Adobe Premiere Pro transitions you'd like to play back in real time on your RT.X system, see the "Defining your Adobe Premiere Settings" chapter of your Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme Pro User Guide Supplement.
-
Import your project to the finishing station
When your project is complete, copy the Adobe Premiere Pro project file and all related media (video clips, graphics, titles, and audio clips) to your Matrox RT.X finishing station.
To load the completed project in Premiere Pro on Matrox RT.X, do the following:
- Start a new project by choosing File > New Project.
- In the New Project dialog box, choose Matrox DV and DVCAM > Matrox DV and DVCAM Standard from the list of available presets.
- Specify a location and name for your new project and click OK.
- Import your completed project by choosing File > Import.
- In the Import Project dialog box, locate your Adobe Premiere Pro project file (.prproj)) and choose Open.
- Drag the sequence for your project onto the Timeline.

-
Add realtime effects or export to MPEG-2
The imported project will now play back in real time. You can also add powerful realtime Matrox effects available on Matrox RT.X to your project, or export the project to MPEG-2 format for use with a DVD-authoring program.
