Creating sequences of effects using the razor tool

Complex sequences of realtime effects can be created by splitting a clip. You can split a clip on the Timeline by using the razor tool to apply two different effects that can't normally be applied to a single clip. This differs from keyframing an effect, which lets you change an effect's settings over time. For more information on keyframing effects, see Customizing your effects using keyframes.

This tutorial shows you how to use the razor tool on a graphics clip to apply a page curl and a particle effect to the clip in real time.

  1. Set up the Adobe Premiere Timeline
Start Adobe Premiere and import any video clip, placing it onto the Timeline on track Video 1A. Import any graphics clip, such as a single-frame title, and place it onto track Video 2. Drag the border of your graphics clip so that it is the same length as your video clip on track Video 1A, as shown below.

    2. Select the razor tool and click the clip where you want to split it, as shown below.

    2. Using the Directory list, choose any effect from the Effect List.
    3. Click OK to return to your Timeline.

  5. Preview your effect in real time
Press the Play button in the Monitor window or press the Enter key on your keyboard to preview the resulting page curl and particle effect on a graphic in real time.
Note   When a clip on the Timeline has a video effect applied to it, a green bar appears at the top. timeline_final
Expert tip You can apply a realtime fade-in or fade-out to one or more of your effects by adjusting the opacity of the clip (as shown above) to allow your graphics clip to gradually appear or disappear onscreen.
