An evolutionary version of PCI, PCIe is an I/O interconnect bus standard that includes a protocol and a layered architecture, which expands on and increases the data transfer rates of original PCI. PCIe is a two-way, serial connection that carries data in packets along two pairs of point-to-point data lanes, compared to the single parallel data bus of traditional PCI that routes data at a set rate. PCIe comes in several physical form factors and several data transfer levels. Depending on the bandwidth required, PCIe can be offered in x1, x2, x4, x8, and x16 slots resulting in an increase in data transfer rates and faster processing time.
